Resources to Help You Manage Debt

Being deep in debt or even close to bankruptcy can be an isolating and stressful experience. Trying to manage your daily obligations while being persistently harassed or reminded of your debt is a real struggle for many Australians. The problem is compounded by the fact that most people don’t know where to find reliable support and information.

Our dedicated debt support program helps clients through a step-by-step process of customised support to manage their debt. However, as a starting point, this page aims to point you in the right direction for independent resources related to personal insolvency and the issues surrounding personal bankruptcy.

Online Resources

Set aside some time to gather information and tips from reputable websites. Keep in mind that it’s best if your information is not coming from private companies with a vested interest to keep you in debt for longer, e.g. debt recovery agencies or unregistered companies.

For most people, ASIC’s Moneysmart is an excellent starting point for information and practical tools. Managed by the Australian Securities & Investment Commission, the online content hub offers a wealth of tips including a calculator you can use to tally up your debts and useful contact information for financial counsellors and legal aid.

Community and Government Resources

The National Debt Helpline is a community-based non-profit group that offers some free financial counselling to get you on the right track. You can visit their website for contact details and further information. They may not have the ability to provide in-depth or highly personal guidance, but they’re a solid starting point and can provide a valuable sounding board when you’re in the thick of mounting debts.

For extreme cases of debt management, such as potential bankruptcy, you may find it more helpful to speak to an independent consultant who can offer you more detailed help and expertise.

Independent advice from a trusted consultant

If debt is affecting your life, I encourage you not to go it alone. I’ve heard countless people tell me the ways they were taken advantage of by unscrupulous and unregistered debt collection agents and I know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Please know that there is a path forward towards financial freedom.
